A 29-year-old Milpitas man has died after a violent motorcycle crash at the intersection of Cedar Boulevard and Stevenson Boulevard in Newark last Thursday, according to police. Emergency crews rushed the rider to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Newark police said alcohol may have been a factor as investigators work to piece together what happened.
What investigators say
In a news release from the Newark Police Department, the Traffic Unit reported that the motorcycle struck a traffic island and then a traffic signal at Cedar and Stevenson. Investigators identified the rider as a 29-year-old Milpitas resident and confirmed the crash occurred last Thursday. The department noted this is Newark's first fatal traffic collision of 2026 and said detectives are still gathering evidence and reconstructing the crash.
Motorcycle safety in context
Motorcyclists continue to face an outsized risk on the road, especially on busy city corridors and at intersections like Cedar and Stevenson. The California Office of Traffic Safety recorded 583 motorcyclist deaths in 2023, down from 649 in 2022, a drop that still underscores how vulnerable riders remain on California streets. Both the California Office of Traffic Safety and SafeTREC track those statewide numbers and analyze the trends.
