New Braunfels is finally cracking open the next chapter of its library system, moving into design on a long-promised Southeast Library branch that carries a roughly $28.56 million price tag. The youth- and family-focused facility is planned south of the Guadalupe River near I-35 and is meant to take pressure off the city’s packed existing locations as the population keeps climbing, as reported by the City of New Braunfels.

Planned Layout And Budget

According to the City of New Braunfels, voters signed off on Proposition C, which dedicates $28,560,000 to the Southeast branch. The city describes the project as a roughly 23,250-square-foot building that will include meeting rooms, a public plaza and garden space, café service and dedicated spaces for kids and teens.

Project materials from the city place the future branch near Walnut Avenue and Settler’s Crossing, positioned to serve neighborhoods east of I-35 and sit within walking distance of several schools.

Design Team And Timeline

On May 27, 2025, City Council signed off on a $1.88 million contract with San Antonio architecture firm Ford, Powell & Carson to handle final design services, a deal the city says is about 6 percent of the combined design-and-construction budget, according to Community Impact.

The firm rolled out an early schematic at a December open house, and the city reports that a final design could be wrapped by summer 2026. Construction is expected to start once design work is complete.

Why The Branch Matters

The New Braunfels library system is not exactly sitting idle. Checkouts jumped more than 30 percent in just two years, climbing from 577,268 in fiscal year 2021-22 to 773,228 in fiscal year 2023-24.

The Texas State Library and Archives Commission requires jurisdictions the size of New Braunfels to maintain at least one collection item per resident. City officials say the new Southeast branch will help meet that benchmark and keep shelves from getting stretched too thin.

“We need to offer spaces for people to come together and do programs,” New Braunfels Library Director Cole Johnson told Community Impact, framing the branch as both a book hub and a community living room.

Next Steps And Community Input

Residents can check out the latest renderings and leave feedback on the city’s Proposition C project page, and the Library Advisory Board received an update on the Southeast Library in late January, according to the New Braunfels City Council record.

City officials say comments collected from public meetings and the December open house will help fine-tune the final schematic before the project heads into construction procurement.

The Southeast branch is slated for one of New Braunfels’ fastest-growing areas and, if the current schedule stays on track, will become the city’s newest public library in several years. Officials describe it as a way to expand after-school options, neighborhood meeting rooms and technology access for thousands of families on the southeast side.
