A two-vehicle crash in north Phoenix left three people in critical condition on Saturday night near 21st Street and Bell Road. Fire crews arrived to find both vehicles at the scene and said several occupants had already climbed out before emergency personnel got there. The injured, two men and a woman, were rushed to nearby hospitals, and Phoenix police have launched an investigation into what led up to the wreck.
Emergency response
According to 12 News, the Phoenix Fire Department said firefighters were called to the area at about 9:30 p.m. and found two vehicles involved in the collision. Multiple people in both vehicles were able to get out before crews arrived, and three people, two men and a woman, were taken to local hospitals in critical condition.
Where it happened
The crash occurred near the intersection of 21st Street and Bell Road, a heavily traveled north Phoenix corridor the city has already flagged for safety upgrades. The City of Phoenix's Photo Safety Program lists Bell Road among the corridors where speed-monitoring cameras are being installed to help reduce serious, speed-related crashes, according to the City of Phoenix.
Investigation underway
The Phoenix Police Department is investigating what caused the collision and has not released the identities of those injured, according to 12 News. As part of a typical reconstruction, detectives review the crash scene, collect witness statements and look at any available video. Police said additional details could be released as the investigation moves forward.
