Oklahoma City is opening the doors to the new Portland Place Apartments, showcasing how public and private entities can come together to tackle the affordable housing crisis. The 180-unit development at 16010 N. Portland Ave will be inaugurated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by Express Group at 2 p.m. on the upcoming Thursday, Feb. 12, inviting community members to witness the fruits of a concerted effort to bring more affordable living options to the area.
Amid escalating demand for reasonably priced housing, the successful completion of Portland Place Apartments is a testament to the power of partnership. Michael Tibbetts, Vice President of Express Group, emphasized the communal drive behind the project, stating, "This partnership demonstrates the collective commitment to creating housing solutions that serve Oklahoma families," as noted by the City of Oklahoma City. He also pointed out the significance of creating homes that not only serve as residences but also embody the spirit of community-driven work by marrying public leadership with private resources to meet the housing requirements.
The multifaceted financial strategy supporting Portland Place is anchored by a combination of private and public investment. It includes a significant contribution from the City of Oklahoma City, which allocated $1.5 million from the American Rescue Plan Act funds to the development. This funding has been vital in overcoming financial hurdles, thereby securing stable housing solutions for residents, as reported by the City of Oklahoma City's announcements.
Express Group wasn't the only player in this endeavor. A mix of funding partners is behind the project, including Midwest Equity Housing Group, who supplied Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Equity, and Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust that provided both construction and permanent lending solutions. Additionally, Oklahoma Housing Finance Agency contributed through its National Housing Trust Fund support. Shannon Entz, Housing Strategy Implementation Manager, hopes the project sets a precedent for future developments, stating, "The City’s $1.5 million investment was necessary to fill the financing gap and make this affordable housing development possible," as per a report by the city's official website. She also expressed a desire for more such projects providing quality housing with essential amenities at accessible prices.
