Downtown Yukon is gearing up for its tenth annual Rock the Route festival on Thursday, September 3, but this year's version comes with new infrastructure built specifically for Route 66's 100th birthday: a free shuttle running every 15 minutes, a freshly paved Main Street, and a permanent shield monument marking the Mother Road's path through town.
The celebration, which the City of Yukon has framed as a tribute to its deep ties to Route 66, kicks off at 6 p.m. with children's activities and food trucks, according to News 9. Local band The Smokin' Oaks takes the stage at 7 p.m., followed by headliner Josh Weathers at 9 p.m., with a combined drone show and fireworks finale set for 10:30 p.m., per the official schedule shared by Yukon Parks and Recreation. Rock the Route has been held in Yukon for a decade, first launching in 2016, and this year's drone display follows a format that was previously a hit at Freedom Fest, News 9 reports.
A Shuttle Built for Centennial Crowds
To handle what organizers expect will be a bigger-than-usual crowd, the City of Yukon has partnered with Yukon Middle School to offer free parking, with shuttles running attendees between the school and the downtown event starting at 6 p.m. on September 3. As reported by AIM Real Estate, the shuttle runs every 15 minutes between Yukon Middle School and the downtown food truck area along Route 66 until midnight — a logistical addition that never existed in the event's first nine years. Local businesses are also opening up their parking lots for attendees, according to News 9.
The push for smoother traffic flow extended beyond shuttle buses. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation accelerated a resurfacing project along Route 66 in Yukon between 6th Street and Cornwell Drive, moving the work up a full year so the roadway would be freshly paved ahead of the centennial events, the AIM Real Estate report notes. Crews worked night shifts between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. specifically to avoid disrupting daytime retail traffic, with the project originally not slated to begin until 2027.
New Landmark Joins the Route
Just blocks from the festival grounds, a new six-foot Route 66 shield monument was erected at the northeast corner of 5th and Main Street this August, according to a community update from Yukon Positive Happenings. The monument came through a statewide public art initiative funded by the Oklahoma Route 66 Revitalization Grant program, with sponsorship from OG&E and Cox. Historical records from the City of Yukon note that Main Street first received asphalt paving back in 1926, the same year the highway was designated — paving that was laid specifically to accommodate the new U.S. Route 66 running through what was then an agricultural milling community.
That century-old connection is part of a broader statewide push. Oklahoma contains more than 400 drivable miles of Route 66, the longest continuous drivable stretch of the highway in any state, according to figures from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation. The state established the Oklahoma Route 66 Centennial Commission in 2019 to organize the 100th-anniversary festivities, alongside a separate commission created in 2022 that distributes Project 66 revitalization grants to towns along the corridor, per the Oklahoma Route 66 Association.
Headliner With a Mission-Trip Past
Josh Weathers, the night's headliner, has performed at the Grand Ole Opry, News 9 reports. Before returning to his touring country-soul career, Weathers stepped away from music to co-found Love Like You Mean It, a non-profit focused on anti-human trafficking efforts and child relief work in India and El Salvador, according to his official biography on JoshWeathers.com.
Opening the night is The Smokin' Oaks, a Yukon-based rock band formed in early 2023 and named after a residential neighborhood in town. The group released its debut single, “Outer Space,” this August following recent studio sessions, according to an announcement from Yukon Parks and Recreation. The drone show closing out the evening is expected to include local and Route 66 Americana-themed surprises, News 9 notes.
Oklahoma Gas & Electric, Tinker Federal Credit Union, and Tyler Media are listed as the primary corporate partners backing this year's celebration, per Yukon Parks and Recreation.
