Early this morning, a serious crash on Boston's iconic Zakim Bridge left a pickup truck hovering precariously over the edge. According to Boston 25 News, the incident occurred around 5:30 a.m., forcing the closure of the right lane at Exit 19. The vehicle, caught on aerial footage, appeared to be balancing on a snowbank and fencing, with one tire dangling dramatically over the concrete wall on the northbound side of the Interstate 93 overpass.
Witnesses reported the truck was attempting to avoid a disabled vehicle when the driver swerved and crashed into the barrier. It is yet to be confirmed if there were any injuries caused by the crash. In response, a heavy-duty tow rotator truck was called to thoroughly secure and remove the pickup truck, as stated by the Boston 25 News report.
The Zakim Bridge is known for being a single-level, 10-lane cable-stayed bridge that carries a significant amount of traffic each day. This morning commuters had to slowly navigate past the crash site via the left lanes, leading to reported traffic delays.
Meanwhile, another account by WCVB highlighted that the incident specifically took place just before the exit to Sullivan Square, situated right above the southbound HOV lane. Both sources have yet to provide additional details on the driver's condition or the cause of the initial avoidance maneuver that led to the truck's dangerous position over the Interstate 93 overpass.
