Anthony Craig Hunter, already one of three suspects charged in the killing of 13-year-old Liam Spahnle-Bailey, was hit Tuesday with 10 more counts after prosecutors say they tied him to a separate apartment shooting in southeast Portland. The new charges include attempted murder and stem from an investigation that, according to prosecutors, found an apartment riddled with bullet strikes and dozens of shell casings.
Arraignment follows December apartment attack
According to court documents obtained by KATU, police were called on Dec. 13, 2024, to the 7700 block of Southeast Mitchell Street after multiple residents reported hearing at least 30 shots. Investigators say officers arrived to find an apartment peppered with bullet strikes and 67 shell casings. Surveillance video allegedly showed five men walk up to the front door, with four of them opening fire into the unit.
Connection to the Gresham case
Hunter is also accused in the April 27, 2025 killing of 13-year-old Liam Spahnle-Bailey, who was struck by a stray bullet while sleeping at his father's unit in the Eleven Pines Apartments, according to the Gresham Police Department. A months-long manhunt and interagency investigation followed. Hunter was taken into custody in September, and other suspects were arrested in the weeks after, as reported by KPTV.
Court filings show separate assault allegations
Court records indicate Hunter was indicted and arraigned on Feb. 13 on third and fourth degree assault charges tied to an incident prosecutors say occurred in September 2025 at the Multnomah County Jail. His trial in the teen death case is currently set for January 2027, according to documents obtained by KATU. Prosecutors say the new filings stack onto an already complicated docket that will take months of pretrial work to untangle.
Community reaction and stakes
Officials say Liam's killing rattled east-side neighborhoods, sparked a reward and triggered a nationwide search for suspects. "This shooting is a tragic reminder of how the impact of gun violence reaches far beyond the shooters and their intended victims," Gresham Police Chief Travis Gullberg said after the April shooting, according to OPB.
