San Francisco’s Muni 12 line hit a wall of protest this morning, as demonstrators blocked the intersection of Sansome and Washington in the Financial District, forcing buses to detour in both directions and backing up downtown commutes. Drivers were redirected onto alternate streets, some stops were skipped, and inbound and outbound riders were left with longer-than-usual trips.
According to SFMTA, “ATTN: IB/OB 12 rerouting around sansome/washington due to protest activity.” The post also directed riders to SFMTA for real-time detour updates and alternative routing information.

A press release from CODEPINK Bay Area said organizers planned a memorial outside the Israeli Consulate at 456 Montgomery at 10:30 AM, an event that overlapped with the morning rush. It was not immediately clear whether that gathering and the protest that prompted the Muni reroute were organized by the same group, but both unfolded in the same neighborhood.
Impact on service and downtown traffic
The Financial District is a frequent staging ground for demonstrations because of the federal and consular offices clustered in the area. Protesters have blocked Sansome and Washington before, including a 2016 immigrant-rights action that forced police to redirect traffic, according to CBS San Francisco.
Transit roundups show that when major downtown corridors are blocked, Muni typically detours buses or skips stops to keep service moving, a pattern noted by Moovit.
Where to get updates
For the latest information on detours and stop changes, riders can check SFMTA or follow SFMTA on X for immediate notices. Riders may also call 311 (or 415-701-2311 from outside San Francisco) for trip assistance and to report service issues, per the agency website.
