An early Sunday drive on U.S. Highway 101 near Boronda Road in Salinas turned into a near-fatal nightmare when a woman, bleeding from multiple stab wounds, jumped out of a moving SUV and ran into the northbound lanes to save herself. Officers found her on the freeway and rushed her to Natividad Medical Center with serious injuries. Investigators say her split-second decision to bail from the vehicle while under attack likely kept a bad situation from becoming far worse as detectives work to trace where the assault began and how it unfolded.
According to CBS San Francisco, the California Highway Patrol says the woman was stabbed while riding in a vehicle traveling northbound on Highway 101 near the Boronda Road exit shortly after midnight. The victim told dispatchers she managed to escape from the SUV while the attack was still underway, and CHP and Salinas police called for emergency medical crews at the scene. CBS San Francisco reports that she was then transported to Natividad Medical Center for treatment of multiple stab wounds.
Suspect Identified, Charges Stack Up
"This was a violent and disturbing attack, and the victim's actions likely saved her life," Capt. Eric Zivic of the CHP said. Detectives traced the incident to a black 2017 Kia Sorento and identified the vehicle's registered owner as 19-year-old Evelio Ramirez Ruiz. Salinas police arrested Ruiz on Sunday morning in an unrelated incident, and CHP detectives later linked him to the stabbing. Per CBS San Francisco, Ruiz is facing attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment, attempted kidnapping and aggravated mayhem, and jail records show he remained in custody at the Monterey County Jail.
Highway 101 Flashpoint in North Salinas
The Boronda Road offramp sits in north Salinas along a busy stretch of Highway 101, where trouble on or near the exit has previously forced CHP to shut down lanes for shootings and serious collisions. As reported by KSBW, northbound lanes near Boronda have been blocked for separate investigations in the past, a reminder of how fast violence on the freeway can ripple out to threaten drivers who have nothing to do with the original incident. In this latest case, the victim was taken to Natividad Medical Center, the county's Level II trauma center at 1441 Constitution Boulevard, which handles the region's most serious emergency cases.
Legal Stakes Could Not Be Higher
Aggravated mayhem is a serious felony under California law that covers intentionally causing permanent disfigurement or depriving a person of a limb or organ, and it carries the possibility of life in prison under California Penal Code § 205, according to Justia. Attempted murder is generally prosecuted under Penal Code § 664/187 and alleges an intent to kill, with penalties that vary based on the degree and specific facts, as outlined in California law guides. The accused is presumed innocent, and prosecutors must still prove each element of the charges in court.
CHP's Coastal Division and Salinas detectives say the investigation remains active and ongoing. Authorities have not released a motive and are urging anyone with information to contact law enforcement. This story will be updated if officials release additional details.
