After recent storms swept through the area, rifle enthusiasts will have to find a new mark to aim at temporarily. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) has announced that the rifle range at Sherburne Wildlife Management Area (WMA) Shooting Range is shuttered until further notice. The culprit: Several trees knocked down by the weekend's turbulent weather.
In an update that was short and to the point, LDWF shared that fallen trees are the reason visitors must briefly hold their fire. They assured that the closure is only until the debris is cleared and any necessary repairs are completed. According to the LDWF news release, "The other ranges will remain open." There was no specified timeline given, but the determination to quickly address the issues and reopen was clear.
Located at 1132 Sherburne Road in Lottie, the Sherburne range lies three miles south of U.S. Highway 190 on Louisiana Highway 975. It's a go-to spot for local shooting aficionados, offering a safe and regulated environment for target practice and training. While the rifle range is a key part of the Sherburne Shooting Range's draw, it's fortunate for some that the other ranges are still able to function normally amidst the disruption.
The LDWF message, delivered via a straightforward announcement, provided essential information without excess detail. "The rifle range will be reopened when the tree is removed and repairs made," the LDWF official website stated, suggesting that shooters might soon be able to resume their activities. The exact extent of the damage, along with the costs and effort required to restore the rifle range to full operational status, wasn't disclosed. Perhaps it's not the grandest story of man versus nature's wrath, but for those affected, it's a waiting game filled with anticipation to return to their favored sport.
