San Francisco woke up to a gray, soaking today, with steady rain, temperatures holding in the low 50s, and pockets of moderate downpours. The result: slick roads, slower-than-usual commutes, and onshore winds expected to strengthen through the afternoon.
High-Tide Flooding Risk
A Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect tomorrow, with forecasters warning of up to about 1.2 feet of inundation at the San Francisco tidal gauge around high tides. That kind of bump can bring short-lived ponding along the Embarcadero and other shoreline roads. Drivers and pedestrians are urged to check tide windows before parking or walking close to the bay, according to NWS San Francisco.
Heavy Rain Through Tuesday
The rain is expected to stay locked in through today and tomorrow, with new totals often landing between three quarters and one inch across the city and locally higher amounts along the coast. High-resolution model runs also show more intense pockets of rain that could trigger quick urban flooding in spots, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Low-lying streets and clogged storm drains will be the first to show problems.
Afternoon Winds Pick Up
Southerly winds are expected to ramp up this afternoon, then swing around to the northwest by evening. Gusts will commonly hit the 20 to 30 mph range, with stronger bursts tonight until tomorrow. A Wind Advisory is posted for parts of the Central Coast, and small-craft and gale warnings are in effect for local waters. A Winter Weather Advisory is also in place for the Central Coast mountains through midweek, with accumulating snow anticipated, according to NWS San Francisco. Residents are advised to secure loose patio furniture and prepare for more powerful gusts on bridge approaches and exposed hilltops.
What To Watch And What To Do
Drivers are urged to avoid moving through standing water, give themselves extra time on the commute, and steer clear of known flood-prone underpasses and low spots. Ferry operators and small-boat owners should lean cautious until seas calm down. Air travelers could see ripple effects at SFO as winds build; the San Francisco Chronicle reported inbound flights were delayed last night when winds picked up.
For those on bayside blocks, the advice is simple but important: move vehicles and valuables to higher ground, respect barricades, and do not try to sneak around street closures. We will post additional updates if advisories or warnings are upgraded.
