In a recent social media post, the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office (SBSO) warned residents of scam attempts involving fraudulent financial documents and impersonators claiming to represent banks. According to the sheriff's office, scammers are known to aggressively solicit personal and financial information by falsely representing themselves in communications via mail, phone, text, or email.
The sheriff's office stated, "Scammers may contact victims by mail, phone, text, or email claiming there is an issue with a bank account, returned checks, or unpaid funds." As part of the advice to the general public, they should always verify the source before responding to any unexpected financial notices. In a statement made by the sheriff's office, residents should hang up immediately on suspicious calls and contact their financial institutions directly using a trusted phone number.
Furthermore, community members are encouraged to discuss potentially suspicious incidents with trusted family members or friends. The SBSO cautioned, "Never share personal or banking information with someone who called you unsolicited."
The sheriff's office is actively reaching out, asking individuals who have doubts concerning their financial dealings or wish to report dubious activities to call their non-emergency number at (504) 271-2501. Contributing to the warning issued by the sheriff, it's clear that by reporting early, victims can help not only prevent fraud for themselves but also protect others within the St. Bernard community.
