The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office has expanded its partnership with Nunez Community College to provide inmates with vocational and educational training. The program aims to help non-violent offenders gain skills for employment after release.
According to the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office's post, classes are held at the parish jail, including fiber optics and OSHA-10 certification, and are taught by Nunez’s Workforce and STEAM Divisions. Inmates have also completed training through the NCCER Core Construction Program. Classes typically last four hours each weekday in the Parish Prison Chapel.
The program, coordinated by Nunez Director of Adult Education Bradley Narcisse and Capt. Adrian Chalona of the Corrections Division, offers certifications in Powered Industrial Truck operation, HAZWOPER, OSHA-10 safety, and Basic Life Support, including CPR and First Aid. Since August 2025, inmates can also take GED courses taught by instructor Darrel Creecy.
Similar programs are offered in Plaquemines Parish in collaboration with Nunez Community College. The initiatives are supported by a Rapid Response Corrections Grant and the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections.
