The Stark County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning on social media, urging residents to be vigilant against a prevalent scam involving gift cards. The sheriff's office clarified that legitimate businesses, government agencies, and nonprofits do not request payments via gift cards, a method preferred by scammers due to its untraceable nature and ease of monetization.
According to the Stark County Sheriff's Office, the notice shared on Facebook, scammers frequently demand gift cards from popular retailers and services like Apple (iTunes/App Store), Target, eBay, Amazon, Google Play, Walmart, and prepaid cards from providers like Visa, Mastercard, or American Express. If an individual insists on gift card payment, the Sheriff's office advises immediately ending the interaction, as it is almost certainly a scam.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) provides resources for consumers to protect themselves from such deceptive tactics. Scammers manipulate victims into purchasing gift cards, urging them to share the card's PIN, which grants them instant access to the funds—essentially like handing over cash. The FTC's website details steps people can take to avoid falling prey to these schemes and to report any incidents they may encounter. The sheriff's office points to the FTC's guidance as a crucial resource in the fight against this pervasive form of fraud.
