A routine Thursday morning on Cleveland’s West Side turned into a rolling headache for city crews after police say a 37-year-old man swiped a city van, took off through several neighborhoods, and ultimately crashed near the Steelyard Commons shopping area.
Officials said the search for the van wound through multiple West Side communities before officers finally tracked down the suspect and took him into custody.
According to WKYC, the first call came in around 8:01 a.m. in the 3900 block of Ridge Road near West Park Cemetery, where the van was reported stolen. Officers later located the vehicle in the area of West 97th Street and Lorain Avenue, and a crash was reported around 10:30 a.m. near I-176 south and Jennings Road. Police determined that the wrecked vehicle was the same city van reported stolen earlier in the morning.
How officers tracked the van
Investigators said the city’s real-time crime center, along with a network of Flock Safety cameras, generated alerts that helped narrow the van’s path and guide officers to the right area. Automated license-plate readers log plate numbers, timestamps, and locations and can be programmed with "hot lists" that trigger alerts in real time, according to the Brennan Center. That blend of private camera footage and police monitoring has been credited with quicker recoveries of stolen cars, while also drawing ongoing privacy concerns.
Arrest, medical clearance and next steps
Police said the suspect was ultimately detained near Steelyard Commons and taken to a hospital for medical clearance before being booked into the Cuyahoga County Jail, as reported by WKYC. Officers said they tried to pull the van over at one point, but the driver did not comply, and police disengaged and drove in the opposite direction before the crashed vehicle was later found.
Detectives are still piecing together the timeline and collecting evidence. The department has not yet released the suspect’s name or announced formal charges.
Cleveland police said the investigation remains active and that additional information could be shared as the case moves toward potential charging. Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to contact the department.
