A late-night escape attempt in Highland Park ended with a stolen pickup stuck on an embankment and its driver bolting on foot, leaving neighbors and police to sort out the mess.
Witnesses said a silver Chevy Silverado tried to muscle its way up a slope at the dead end where a stairway runs alongside the street, jumped a guardrail and wound up wedged at the top on Tuesday night. Officers quickly flooded the area and searched nearby yards, but observers at the scene said the driver was still at large.
How police say it unfolded
According to the West Seattle Blog, officers initially believed they had the Silverado boxed in where 8th Avenue would meet SW Kenyon. Patrol units moved in to contain the truck, only for the driver to choose the embankment as a last-ditch escape route.
The site reports the Silverado had been listed as stolen out of Redmond. Over police radio, the driver was described as a Hispanic man, bald, in a red hoodie and blue jeans. After the truck became stuck, the man reportedly bailed out and ran. Police were said to have called for a tow truck for the marooned pickup while they continued combing the neighborhood.

A neighbor named Landon supplied the photo and short video featured in the West Seattle Blog coverage. The clip captures the Silverado driving up the embankment and then hanging up at the top, unable to go any farther.
"The police cornered a man in a stolen truck at the dead end where 8th and Kenyon would connect," the West Seattle Blog quotes Landon as saying, and the footage appears to line up with the description officers broadcast over the air.
