Emergency crews were dispatched to a Wayland, Massachusetts assisted living facility early Tuesday morning following multiple reports of a suspected norovirus outbreak. According to Boston 25 News, authorities received calls at 8:38 a.m. about residents at the facility located at 10 Green Way exhibiting symptoms typical of this highly contagious virus.
Five residents, who suffered from the virus-like symptoms including nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, were transported to local hospitals for further medical attention. Acting Wayland Police Chief Mark Hebert and Wayland Fire Chief Neil McPherson stated in a joint statement obtained by Boston 25 News, "The Town has engaged with Wayland’s Public Health Nurse, and personnel from the Town and Police and Fire Departments have met with the facility’s Assistant Executive Director."
In response to the outbreak, local health authorities have taken measures to address the situation and contain the spread of the virus. NBC Boston reports that the town's public health nurse and officials have consulted with the assistant director of the affected facility. Moreover, warnings have been issued to other assisted living facilities within Wayland to raise awareness and preparedness.
The response required to manage the situation has strained local resources, prompting additional support from neighboring communities. Overwhelmed with the emergency responses, mutual aid has been included from the Sudbury Fire Department and Brewster Ambulance, who have been called in to assist as reported by NBC Boston.
