An overnight house fire in DeKalb County has resulted in the tragic loss of four family members, according to firefighting authorities. Reports state that DeKalb County Fire Rescue responded to the emergency after flames were sighted at a residence on the 1800 block of Winthop Road just before the turn of midnight, when they arrived they found that the single-story home was overtaken by heavy smoke and intense flames, as detailed by CBS News.
In a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta, it was learned that firefighters conducted immediate search-and-rescue operations amidst the chaos, managing to extract one victim from the inferno who was then transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where they eventually succumbed to their injuries, rescue teams continued their efforts and found three additional victims inside the home during their relentless search.
Interim Fire Chief Melvin Carter disclosed that the deceased included one woman and three men, all related, "The victims were one woman and three men," Carter said, but he refrained from releasing their names. CBS News further reported that a family member, who opted to remain off-camera, identified two of the victims as his own mother and father.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and remains under investigation, officials said. The American Red Cross has been contacted to assist seven survivors, including five children, who escaped the flames. Authorities continue to review the circumstances surrounding the incident as support services are provided to those affected.
