The DeKalb County community grapples with the aftermath of a harrowing train versus car incident that occurred yesterday morning. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, a CSX train collided with a vehicle that was stopped on the tracks near Avondale Estates, tragically resulting in the death of the male driver and leaving a female passenger in critical condition.
The collision took place just before 2 a.m. at the intersection of North Clarendon Avenue, and Ponce de Leon Avenue. The vehicle, for reasons yet unsaid by officials, was stationary on the tracks when it was struck. Amidst the chaos, a glimmer of humanity was notable as the male driver was attempting to assist his female passenger from the car when the impact occurred. Authorities have kept identities confidential as they continue their investigation into the perplexing circumstance leading to the vehicle's vulnerable position on the tracks.
No injuries were reported among the train's crew, a testament perhaps to the inherent safety of rail travel for those within the iron carriages but tragically not for those who find themselves in its unconquerable path. "At approximately 1:56 a.m. ET on Tuesday, Feb. 10, a CSX train came in contact with an occupied vehicle at the N. Clarendon Avenue and Ponce De Leon Avenue crossing in Scottdale, Georgia," stated a CSX spokesperson, according to a report by FOX 5 Atlanta. The statement continued, "DeKalb County Public Safety quickly responded to the scene and reported two occupants were in the vehicle at the time of the incident. One was fatally injured while the other was transported to a nearby hospital with unknown injuries."
The CSX spokesperson also conveyed condolences, saying, "CSX extends its deepest sympathies to everyone impacted by this tragic incident and will continue to support local law enforcement as they complete the investigation," as noted by 11Alive.
