A University of Georgia student has been reported dead after an incident involving a rolling truck on Peabody Street. The student, George Whittenburg, age 21, was standing outside his 2018 Toyota Tundra last Wednesday, when the vehicle, for reasons still unknown, began to roll in reverse,
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Whittenburg was struck and rolled over by his truck outside the driver's door. The vehicle continued to move backwards, hitting another unoccupied vehicle before slamming into a tree; finally coming to a halt. The local police responded to the crash in the 300 block of Peabody Street around 7:35 p.m., the same day.
Atlanta News First reported that Whittenburg, originally from Austin, Texas, was immediately taken to a hospital due to visible injuries sustained in the accident. His conditions worsened over the subsequent days, and he passed away last Friday. This tragic event marks the first traffic fatality in Athens-Clarke County for the year 2026.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with authorities yet to ascertain what led to the Toyota Tundra's unforeseen movement. To date, police have not released speculations as to the causes behind the Tundra's lethal roll.
