The Winn-Dixie inside Riverside Market at 5400 Tchoupitoulas Street is slated to close in late March and then come back as an Aldi, company spokespeople say. The longtime Uptown supermarket is set to give way to Aldi's smaller, discount-focused format, and the shift is already showing up in clearance pricing and staff notices on site. Store employees were reportedly given advance notice and told they will have the first shot at applying for roles at the new Aldi, according to WWL-TV.
As reported by WWL-TV, Southeastern Grocers confirmed the Riverside Market location will close in late March, and Aldi representatives said the Tchoupitoulas store will go through a phased conversion. According to WWL-TV, associates at converting locations receive advance notice and get priority to apply for jobs at the new Aldi store.
ALDI's expansion and timeline
ALDI's national buildout is driving the local shakeup. In a March 7, 2024 press release, the company said it had completed the acquisition of Southeastern Grocers and would invest more than $9 billion to add roughly 800 stores in the United States by the end of 2028. ALDI told PR Newswire that about 50 stores began conversion in the latter half of 2024 and that a majority of those locations reopened as Aldi in 2025 under a phased approach.
Other local closures and conversions
The conversion wave is not stopping in Uptown. The Winn-Dixie at 211 Veterans Memorial Boulevard in Metairie started clearance sales and is scheduled to close March 1, with Aldi expected to open a remodeled store there by the end of the year, according to Axios New Orleans. The Metairie switch follows a string of recent market swaps and new openings across south Louisiana as Aldi keeps expanding its footprint.
What shoppers and workers should expect
When a full-service supermarket is converted to an Aldi, shoppers typically find a tighter product lineup that leans heavily on private-label goods, lower everyday prices and a streamlined layout built for quicker in-and-out trips. Workers at stores that are changing over are commonly offered roles at the new location or other support during the transition. Hoodline's recent coverage of nearby changes, including a Metairie update and a new Aldi opening in Luling, shows a familiar pattern of markdowns, remodeling work and staffing notices that usually come before a reopening. Lakewood Plaza shakeup has highlighted those local shifts.
Shoppers who rely on Winn-Dixie for pharmacy services, deli items or broader full-service options should keep an eye on in-store postings and operator announcements for precise dates and any service cutbacks. We will update this story as company timelines, permits and opening dates are confirmed.
