The University of Texas System Board of Regents has signed off on $65 million for a new Student Success Center at The University of Texas at El Paso, a two-floor hub that will replace the El Paso Natural Gas Conference Center on the west side of campus and is projected to open in 2031. University officials say the project will keep UTEP’s signature Bhutanese-inspired look while pulling counseling, career and accommodation services into one central spot.

Regents approve funding

During their Feb. 19 meeting, the Board of Regents approved $65 million in permanent university funds for the new center, according to a press release from UTEP. UTEP President Heather Wilson called the building “a much-needed student support services hub on the west side of campus” and said the project will also bring modern dining and event space for students, the release noted.

What will be inside

The plan calls for updated food service and event areas on the ground floor, with two primary floors above that will concentrate key student services under one roof, according to KVIA. Those upper levels are slated to house Counseling and Psychological Services, the University Career Center, the Center for Accommodations and Support Services (CASS) and the Military Student Success Center. University leaders say putting these offices side by side should cut down on the campus cross-country trek students often make to get help.

Part of a wider campus plan

The Student Success Center is one piece of a larger campus master plan that also includes new housing and a revamped student union. It follows a September 2024 student vote to increase union fees so Union West can be replaced and Union East renovated, as reported by The Prospector. Master-plan materials describe UTEP as a Bhutanese-inspired oasis framed by the Franklin Mountains, a language echoed in regional coverage by KTSM.

Timeline and next steps

According to UTEP, the Student Success Center is expected to open in 2031, with several departments currently based in the Student Union set to move into the new building, freeing up space for future union renovations. The university has not yet released a construction schedule, and planners say design and budgeting work still needs to be completed before they can lock in a groundbreaking date.
