A 25-year-old motorcyclist was killed Tuesday evening after a collision with a van at the intersection of Isla Palma Lane and State Road 681 in Sarasota County, turning a routine commute into a fatal scene just after the dinner hour. Authorities said the crash happened around 6:30 p.m. as the rider headed south toward a flashing yellow traffic signal. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Florida Highway Patrol troopers, the van entered the intersection from En Theos Lane and the motorcycle hit the vehicle in the junction. The agency has not yet released the rider's identity and says the crash remains under investigation, according to Tampa Bay 28.

The van was driven by a 32-year-old Cape Coral man who was preparing to turn left from En Theos Lane when the impact occurred, WWSB reported. Troopers told the station the motorcyclist was approaching the flashing yellow signal on SR-681 as the two vehicles met in the intersection.

SR-681 design and safety context

State Road 681, often called the Venice Connector, started life as a limited-access spur but now features at-grade crossings like En Theos Lane and Isla Palma Lane as development has moved east toward the corridor. The Florida Department of Transportation is working through a Project Development and Environment (PD&E) study for the I-75 at SR-681 interchange and related improvements that officials say could affect access and safety along the route, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

The Florida Highway Patrol's Traffic Homicide Unit is leading the investigation. Tampa Bay 28 reported that the agency plans to release more information as it becomes available.
