Genova Delicatessen will close its last Walnut Creek shop today, wrapping up a 58-year run in the city and sending regulars in for one last order at the counter. Staff were marking down stock and ringing up final rounds of cold cuts and Italian specialties as customers crowded in to grab a final sandwich or load up their fridges.
According to the East Bay Times, the deli confirmed that today would be its final day in Walnut Creek, with hours through closing set at 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The business said it was offering 30% off inventory and described shutting the shop as a "heartfelt decision" after years of mounting economic pressure and shifts in the retail landscape. The company added that its Genova Delicatessen Ravioli Factory will stay open, and its pastas and prepared foods will continue to show up at local markets.
Genova's recent retrenchment
Genova's Walnut Creek footprint had already started to contract late last year, when a second location on Treat Boulevard closed in November, as reported by SFGATE. The brand traces its roots to an Oakland shop that opened in 1926 and has seen several long-running locations either close or consolidate in the past decade amid rent disputes and rising costs.
What customers can still buy
Owners said the wholesale and manufacturing side of the business will remain the backbone of the Genova name, so shoppers should still be able to find Genova-branded ravioli, sauces and frozen dishes in area grocery stores and markets. Regulars told reporters they were disappointed to lose the counter experience but relieved that the products themselves would keep coming, according to the East Bay Times.
Local retail pressures
The disappearance of another long-running deli highlights a broader squeeze in downtown Walnut Creek, where rising commercial rents and shifting foot traffic have been cited in a series of recent closures. Hoodline's coverage of local shutdowns, such as the SanDai & KOPI Bar closure, helps trace that pattern and what it has meant for family-run spots trying to hang on.
For now, Genova has not announced any plans for a new retail storefront and has not said whether another operator will take over the current space. The factory operation and wholesale accounts appear to be the path forward as the company closes its final retail counter in Walnut Creek.
