Last Wednesday, Yuba-Sutter narcotics investigators executed a search warrant at a Knights Row residence in Yuba City, seizing multiple illegal firearms, high-capacity magazines, ammunition, and about 27 grams of cocaine. Officers also recovered a digital scale and packaging materials consistent with drug distribution.
The suspect, 23-year-old Jose Salgado of Yuba City, was arrested and booked into Sutter County Jail with bail set at $150,000. The case has been forwarded to the Sutter County district attorney’s office for possible prosecution, according to the Yuba City Police Department on their Facebook page.
What officers found
Investigators reported that the physical evidence from the Knights Row search included multiple loaded handguns, a short-barreled rifle, ammunition and high-capacity magazines. They also documented roughly 27 grams of cocaine and packaging consistent with narcotics sales, along with a digital scale.
While the cocaine weight was smaller than some recent NET-5 narcotics seizures, the bust adds to a run of drug and gun investigations in the area. One of those, on January 22, was a multi-location raid that turned up more than 1,500 pills and firearms, according to a previous report on 1,500 pills, cash pile and guns.
Charges and booking
Yuba City police identified the arrested man as 23-year-old Jose Salgado. According to the department's Facebook post, he was booked on a slate of weapons and drug counts, including possession of ammunition by a prohibited person (PC 30305(a)(1)), possession of a firearm by a prohibited person (PC 29800(a)(1)), possession of an assault weapon (PC 30605(a)), possession of a short-barreled rifle (PC 33215), possession of a firearm with altered or removed serial numbers (PC 23920(a)), and possession of a controlled substance for sale and possession while armed (HS 11351 and HS 11370.1(a)). Bail was set at $150,000, according to the post.
The department also emphasized in its post that all persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
How NET-5 fits into recent sweeps
The Yuba-Sutter Narcotic and Gang Enforcement Task Force, commonly known as NET-5, brings together detectives from local and county agencies to focus on suspected narcotics distributors and gang activity, according to the Sutter County Sheriff's Office. Local reporting has documented several targeted NET-5 sweeps this winter, which investigators say are intended to disrupt neighborhood-level distribution routes. One recent multi-location operation, which uncovered pills, firearms and cash, was detailed in coverage of a multi-spot raid with 1,500 pills.
Legal implications
The counts listed by police carry potentially significant penalties under California law. Being a prohibited person in possession of firearms or ammunition is commonly charged as a felony, which can bring state-prison exposure and long-term firearm prohibitions, legal resources note (ChesleyLawyers). Possession of an assault weapon or a short-barreled rifle can be prosecuted as a wobbler, with possible multi-year penalties, and drug possession for sale and possession while armed are felonies that can add years depending on sentencing enhancements and prior convictions, according to theNieves Law Firm, Shouse Law and Long Beach Criminal Defense.
The Sutter County District Attorney’s Office will now review the NET-5 investigation and decide whether to file formal charges. Yuba City police say they encourage anyone with information to contact the department, and they reiterate that the accused remains presumed innocent pending the outcome of the charging process and any court proceedings.
