A deadly collision between an Amtrak passenger train and a car on Highway 51 near Amite left one person dead and sent two others to area hospitals on Wednesday afternoon, family members and local officials said. Relatives at the scene identified the person killed as 23-year-old Dorian Batiste, a passenger in the vehicle. The driver and another passenger were taken for medical treatment, and crews later cleared the wreckage so Highway 51 could reopen Wednesday evening.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office responded to the crash at Highway 51 and Ponders Quarters Lane, where family members identified the victim as 23-year-old Dorian Batiste, according to WDSU. Authorities said three people were inside the vehicle when it "came into contact" with the train. Emergency crews transported two of them to hospitals for treatment, while investigators stayed on scene as railroad personnel and first responders worked to clear the tracks and get traffic moving again.
Amtrak Statement
In a statement quoted by WDSU, Amtrak said the train involved was Train 59, the City of New Orleans route from Chicago to New Orleans. The company said the train was delayed, then allowed to continue its trip. According to the statement, there were no reports of injuries among the approximately 148 passengers or the crew members on board. Amtrak added that Train 59 ultimately resumed service and reached New Orleans after a delay of about two hours and 20 minutes.
