In the predawn quiet of Back of the Yards on Saturday, police say a homeowner confronted a man breaking into his garage and opened fire, hitting the alleged intruder in the leg.
The encounter unfolded around 2:39 a.m. in the 5100 block of S. Loomis Boulevard, according to Chicago police. Officers said the suspect was struck in the right calf, and medics took him to the University of Chicago Hospital, where he is expected to be in good condition. Police noted that the homeowner holds a valid Concealed-Carry License, and detectives are now sorting through what happened.
As reported by ABC7 Chicago, the suspect is a 59-year-old man who was allegedly breaking into the garage when the homeowner confronted him. Chicago police said the homeowner pulled out a gun and fired at the man, who was then transported to the University of Chicago Hospital for treatment. According to CPD, charges are pending while Area One detectives continue the investigation.
Police Investigation Underway
Area One detectives are handling the case, working the scene, collecting evidence and interviewing any potential witnesses. Once they finish their probe, investigators will decide whether to forward the case to prosecutors, who would ultimately determine whether criminal charges are filed against anyone involved.
How This Fits Into A Pattern
Police-involved and homeowner-involved shootings tied to alleged break-ins have been surfacing across the city in recent months. In one earlier case, a separate incident on the West Side turned deadly when a Concealed-Carry License holder shot and killed a man who was allegedly trying to break into an apartment. That September shooting was previously detailed by ABC7 Chicago.
What To Watch Next
Chicago police are asking anyone who was in the 5100 block of S. Loomis Boulevard between about 2:30 and 3 a.m., or who may have security or cellphone video from that window, to contact Area One detectives.
Officials have not announced any criminal charges in the Back of the Yards shooting. This story will be updated if prosecutors file charges or if police release additional details.
