The Bass Museum is stepping outside its main walls and into Collins Park, turning the park’s circular rotunda into a free satellite gallery that neighbors can stroll into any day of the week. The new space, officially dubbed the Rotunda at The Bass, opens to the public on March 28 and will offer year‑round free admission. The debut lines up with The Bass’s Art Outside Picnic, a family‑friendly afternoon in the park that same day.
From Library Assembly Room To Contemporary Art Spot
Originally designed in 1962 by architect Herbert A. Mathes and wrapped in Albert Vrana’s sand‑cast concrete mural "The Story of Man," the rotunda first served as an assembly room for the old Miami Beach Public Library, according to Time Out. When the library was demolished in the 1980s, the circular building stayed put, and the city has now restored and reprogrammed it as a compact exhibition space.
Renovation, Funding And Upgrades
Per the City of Miami Beach’s project fact sheet, the work included an 895‑square‑foot addition that added an entry lobby and modern restrooms, upgrades to mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, improved ADA access, and refreshed landscaping and walkways. The fact sheet lists a project budget of $3.15 million and notes the project was funded in part by the Arts & Culture G.O. Bond and a state cultural facilities grant.
Opening Day Details And Park Programming
The Rotunda opens March 28, and The Bass will mark the debut with its Art Outside Picnic from 4–7pm. The picnic is free with RSVP and will feature live music, hands‑on artmaking and family programming, according to The Bass. Seating in the park is limited, and parking is available at the municipal Collins Park Parking Garage at 340 23rd Street.
What’s On View Inside The Rotunda
The space will debut with "Welcome Wall (2015–2026)" by Pascale Marthine Tayou, a site‑specific installation that clusters flashing "welcome" signs in dozens of languages. Admission to the Rotunda will be free year‑round, according to Time Out.
For Miami Beach residents and visitors, the Rotunda at The Bass offers another low‑barrier way to encounter contemporary art outside traditional gallery walls; the museum says it will steward programming at the site with rotating installations and public events.
