Books and ballet are about to share a roof in West Valley City. The Salt Lake County Library is moving forward with a major rebuild of its West Valley branch that will be shared with Ballet West. The two-story project on Lancer Way is set to combine a modern public library with the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy and a small black-box theater. County leaders say the plan will expand arts access while updating one of the system's oldest branches for current library users.
What The Project Will Look Like
As reported by FOX13, the Salt Lake County Council unanimously approved the Library Board's motion to renovate and expand the West Valley branch and partner with Ballet West on a shared facility. The two-story building planned for the library's Lancer Way site will include public stacks and programming space, Ballet West's Frederick Quinney Lawson Academy studios on the second floor and a small black-box theater. According to the outlet, county communications manager Sara Neal said construction is expected to be completed in 2029 and officials will seek resident input on the design.
Why Ballet West Wants In
According to a press release published by Utah Business, Ballet West says its Frederick Quinney Lawson Academy has filled enrollment and needs more studio space. Ballet West Executive Director Michael Scolamiero said the black-box theater will fill "a profound void" of affordable performance space on the west side, and Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson described the project as a "future-ready hub" that pairs public purpose with private-sector innovation.
How The Community Fits In
As FOX13 reported, 17-year-old West Valley resident Ava Christiansen said the arts provide an important emotional outlet and give people "something creative" to do. The county's own figures show the branch logged about 123,000 visitors, 160,000 item checkouts and more than 1,000 programs in 2024, a workload that underscores the push for a larger, updated space.
Timeline And Next Steps
Officials say the county will select an architectural firm and host open houses to gather resident input. Recent county projects have added features like playgrounds, rooftop gardens and expanded Create spaces, according to Utah Business. The Lancer Way corridor itself has seen street and sidewalk upgrades in a city-led reconstruction project, a change that officials say should improve access to the site, per the city's Lancer Way project page.
The partnership is described as an uncommon example of a major cultural institution attaching itself to a civic service to expand reach and reduce overhead. County and Ballet West leaders say they will return to the public with design options in the months ahead.
