A broken-down truck on 16th Street near Middle Avenue in Elyria turned deadly in the early morning hours when a 25-year-old man was shot and later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, according to police. Officers were called to the area around 2:50 a.m. for reports of gunfire. Investigators say the gunfire erupted after a truck stalled on the street and an exchange between the truck’s driver and people in another vehicle ended with the younger man being hit.
According to News 5 Cleveland, officers at the scene were notified by a nearby hospital that a man had just arrived with a gunshot wound. The 54-year-old truck driver told investigators his vehicle had broken down, and that a vehicle carrying multiple occupants pulled up. The 25-year-old then got out and some kind of interaction followed, ending in the shooting. Police say the occupants of that second vehicle rushed the wounded man to the hospital, and detectives are now working to piece together how a disabled truck led to a fatal confrontation.
Investigation ongoing
Police say the 54-year-old driver and everyone from the other vehicle have been interviewed, and that “no charges have been filed at this time,” according to News 5 Cleveland. Investigators also say the identity of the 25-year-old victim “has not been released” as detectives continue to gather evidence. The case remains active and authorities are asking for the public’s help to fill in the gaps about what happened on that stretch of 16th Street.
