A six-year-old child was grazed by a bullet on Friday in Memphis’ Orange Mound neighborhood, according to police. Officers were called to the 2300 block of Douglass Avenue, where they found the wounded child. The injury was described as a graze, and authorities said no other injuries were confirmed at the scene.
What Police Say Happened
Memphis Police told WREG that officers were dispatched to Douglass Avenue on Friday, where they located the six-year-old and began their investigation. The shooter had not been identified, and detectives were working to sort out the circumstances around the gunfire. Police said no additional victims were found.
Orange Mound On Edge
The Orange Mound neighborhood has been living with repeated gun violence in recent years, including a deadly mass shooting at Orange Mound Park in April 2024 that left two people dead and several others injured, as reported by Action News 5. Law-enforcement officials have at times said they were working with federal partners and community groups to confront youth-related gun violence in the area. Neighbors have told reporters that the constant shootings have left families anxious and exhausted.
Wider Toll On Memphis Kids
Gunshot wounds among children remain a stubborn problem across Memphis. MLK50 reported that April 2025 was one of the deadliest months on record for Memphis children and noted that hospitals such as Le Bonheur have treated hundreds of young gunshot victims in recent years. Doctors say many of those kids were bystanders caught in public shootings, a grim reminder of the danger posed by stray rounds and neighborhood gunfire. That record helps explain why even a graze wound to a child can rattle an entire community.
Investigation Still Active
Police say the investigation remains active and that detectives are following leads to figure out what happened. According to WREG, no suspect has been identified, and no additional victims have been confirmed. Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact the Memphis Police as they work to piece together the details of the shooting. Authorities say more information will be released as it becomes available.
