San Diego police are investigating what they describe as a suspected murder-suicide that left two people dead yesterday in the city’s Burlingame neighborhood. Officers were called to the area after reports of gunfire and found an elderly woman dead at the scene. A 51-year-old man was also found with injuries and was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
Officers responded to reports of shots fired in the 2400 block of San Marcos Avenue. Homicide detectives told CBS 8 that the man shot his mother before turning the gun on himself. Authorities said the woman was in her 80s.
Police: No Immediate Threat to Neighbors
Homicide detectives characterized the case as an apparent family tragedy and stressed that the violence did not appear to pose any broader risk. “There is no danger to the neighborhood,” officials told CBS 8. Investigators have asked anyone with information about what happened to contact the San Diego Police Department’s homicide unit.
Burlingame Neighborhood Context
Burlingame is a mostly residential, historic pocket of San Diego known for low levels of violent crime, according to San Diego Magazine. In the broader region, local reporting has noted a slight uptick in county suicide deaths and expanded crisis-response efforts in recent years.
Investigation Ongoing
San Diego police say homicide detectives are continuing to process the Burlingame scene and review evidence linked to the suspected murder-suicide. Officials said more details will be released as the investigation moves forward and urged anyone with tips or video from the area at the time of the incident to contact the department.
