A Carroll County father is behind bars after his children spoke up at school about what investigators describe as ongoing domestic violence at home. Their accounts triggered a Department of Family and Children Services referral and a full-on criminal investigation. Deputies later arrested the man and booked him into the Carroll County Jail on allegations that include aggravated assault and drug distribution, after searches tied to the case turned up illegal narcotics and a stash of firearms, according to county investigators.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the case began after a child reported an incident at home on March 4, prompting school staff to alert DFCS and law enforcement. During forensic interviews, children told investigators their father routinely abused their mother and, in one incident, pointed a gun at her head, the station reported. One child also disclosed being physically abused.
How the report reached authorities
In Georgia, school employees are mandated reporters, which means they are legally required to contact DFCS when they suspect child abuse. DFCS can then route cases to law enforcement as part of its intake process. The state’s procedure centers on DFCS intake and coordination with police so children can be interviewed and cases investigated without unnecessary delays. As outlined by the Office of the Child Advocate, that coordination is designed to protect children while investigators carry out their work.
Hotel confrontation and seized evidence
FOX 5 reported that the woman and her children were moved to a temporary hotel with the help of a domestic-violence shelter. Despite not having her precise location, the suspect tracked the victim to that hotel, according to the station. Bremen police stepped in after the victim called 911, and deputies later executed a search that uncovered illegal narcotics and firearms tied to the investigation, FOX 5 reported. For immediate help, the Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence runs the statewide hotline at 1-800-33-HAVEN (1-800-334-2836) and connects callers to shelter services; more information is available from the Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
