Two people were killed, and at least one other was injured on Sunday in a violent head-on collision on Cole Grade Road at Fruitvale Road in Valley Center. The rural two-lane stretch was shut down for hours as emergency crews worked the scene and California Highway Patrol investigators documented the wreckage.
The crash began when a Nissan Frontier drifted across the double yellow into the southbound lane and slammed head-on into a Honda Accord, killing two people, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune. The Nissan driver was pronounced dead before reaching a hospital, while a 75-year-old woman riding in the Honda later died at a local hospital, the outlet reported. A second person in the Honda suffered major injuries, and a third person was also taken to a hospital for treatment.
Cole Grade Road Fixes Were Already on the Books
The deadly collision has put fresh attention on a stretch of Cole Grade Road that the County of San Diego already had tagged for safety upgrades and widening. The County's Department of Public Works says Phase 1 of the Cole Grade Road Improvement Project will widen the road between Fruitvale Road and Pauma Heights Road, add a center turn lane, bike lanes and a trail, with construction expected to start in mid-2026. San Diego County DPW says the project is designed to improve traffic flow and safety along the corridor.
CHP Probing Deadly Wreck With Cause Still Unknown
The California Highway Patrol is leading the investigation and has not yet determined a cause, saying it is too early to know whether alcohol, drugs or other factors played a role. Investigators are asking anyone who saw the collision or its aftermath to contact the agency's San Diego Area office with tips or information. CHP San Diego Area lists local contact details for potential witnesses.
The names of the two people who died will be released by the county medical examiner's office after relatives are notified. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that investigators were still working to determine whether impairment or some other cause contributed to the crash.
