A late-night confrontation inside a Back of the Yards home left a 42-year-old man fighting for his life and a 63-year-old facing felony charges, Chicago police say.
The shooting unfolded just after midnight Sunday inside a residence near 45th and Wood streets, according to authorities. Police say the 42-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was rushed to Stroger Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition.
Officers took Dennis White, 63, into custody about 40 minutes after the shooting and recovered a firearm at the scene, police say.
What Police Say Happened Inside the Home
According to FOX 32 Chicago, police say White and the 42-year-old victim knew each other and that the shooting followed an altercation inside the residence.
FOX 32 Chicago reports White has been charged with aggravated battery/discharge of a firearm and is scheduled for a detention hearing on Tuesday.
Back of the Yards Hot Spot
The area around 45th and Wood has long been a trouble zone for gun violence on the South Side. ABC7 previously covered a vigil for a teenager who was shot and killed near that intersection, highlighting neighborhood grief over yet another life lost.
More broadly, reporting has documented stretches of increased rifle- and gang-related shootings in parts of Back of the Yards over the years. A retrospective republished by Police1 draws on earlier Chicago Tribune coverage detailing how some gangs in the city, including in this neighborhood, have turned to more powerful weapons.
What Comes Next in Court
White faces a charge of aggravated battery/discharge of a firearm and is due in court for a detention hearing this week, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
Police have not specified the nature of the relationship between White and the victim or what exactly led up to the alleged shooting. Investigators say the case remains under investigation.
