
A man was shot and killed Saturday evening in a drive-by attack in the Chatham neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side, when gunfire from a passing vehicle turned an ordinary block into yet another crime scene.
Police said the shooting happened around 5:32 p.m. on February 28 in the 7900 block of South Ingleside. Someone in a vehicle opened fire, hitting the man multiple times. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Police call it a drive-by shooting
Chicago police have classified the attack as a drive-by shooting and said Area detectives are handling the case. According to FOX 32 Chicago, the victim was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center and later pronounced dead, and no one was in custody as of Saturday evening. The department’s preliminary report lists the time as about 5:32 p.m. and notes that the shooter fired from a passing vehicle.
Same block has seen other recent incidents
The same stretch of the 7900 block of South Ingleside has seen trouble before. On January 23, officers opened fire on a suspect in a police-involved shooting on that block, according to NBC Chicago. The repeat crime activity highlights how quickly violence can erupt on busy South Side blocks.
What investigators say
Area detectives say the investigation remains active and are asking anyone with information to contact them. No arrests have been reported, according to FOX 32 Chicago. Officials have not yet released the victim’s name as they continue gathering evidence and seeking witnesses.
