An 18-year-old is now facing a murder charge after a January wreck in east Charlotte that killed one passenger and left two others fighting for their lives. Police say a Kia Forte was speeding along Shamrock Drive on Jan. 4 when it ran off the road and slammed into a telephone pole, then a tree. The passenger who died at the scene was identified as 18-year-old Anthony Pavon Santos, and investigators say speed appears to have been a key factor.
As reported by WSOC, officers arrested and booked 18-year-old Ronny Briones‑Melgara on charges that include murder, larceny and possession of a stolen vehicle. Booking photos and a mugshot gallery from WCCB list Briones‑Melgara among recent Mecklenburg County bookings on related counts.
Crash details and investigation
The Charlotte‑Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit says officers were called to the 3200 block of Shamrock Drive at about 2:38 a.m. on Jan. 4. They found the Kia off the roadway with heavy damage to the front and passenger side, and one passenger pronounced dead at the scene. According to a Jan. 5 news release from the Charlotte‑Mecklenburg Police Department, the car had been reported stolen. Investigators say speed appears to have contributed to the crash and are still working to determine whether impairment played any role. The department listed the case under reference number 20260104‑0238‑01 and asked anyone with information to reach out to detectives.
Legal next steps
Briones‑Melgara’s booking record shows multiple charges, and the murder count remains an allegation that prosecutors will have to prove in court. Under North Carolina law, murder is a felony offense, with first‑degree murder carrying the state’s harshest penalties, according to the N.C. General Assembly.

CMPD says the investigation is still active and is again urging anyone with tips to contact Detective Worthy or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers, with full contact details in the department’s news release.
