A 37-year-old woman riding in the front seat of a Tesla sedan died Wednesday after a fatal crash at the intersection of North Randall Road and Mill Street in Batavia, police said. The collision, which also involved a Dodge pickup, sent multiple people to area hospitals and shut down the busy north-south corridor for hours.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Batavia police said the Tesla was heading south on Randall Road and attempted to turn left onto eastbound McKee Street when it was hit by a Dodge pickup traveling north. First responders reported heavy damage to the Tesla and worked to extricate passengers at the scene, and investigators stayed on site to reconstruct the collision, the Tribune reported.

In a media release from the Batavia Police Department, officials said the 37-year-old front-seat passenger sustained life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced dead at an area hospital. Two female occupants of the Tesla and the driver of the Dodge were transported to local hospitals, and an occupant of a Nissan SUV was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, according to the department. Police said no charges have been filed and the crash remains under investigation.

Earlier crashes on Randall Road

The intersection of North Randall Road and Mill Street has seen other crashes in recent months. In February, a collision at roughly the same junction sent two drivers to the hospital, the Daily Herald reported, highlighting ongoing safety concerns along the busy arterial.

City records and safety context

City traffic data and past police reports list the Randall Road and Mill Street area among locations with repeated incidents, according to Batavia Police Department records. Local officials and traffic planners have previously pointed to high turning volumes and closely spaced signals as factors that can complicate driver decisions at the junction.

Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or who has dash-cam footage to contact Batavia police. Authorities said they will release additional details as the investigation continues.
