A day on the Delta turned tragic yesterday when a jet ski flipped near the Discovery Bay Marina launch ramp, killing one person, according to county deputies. Three people were thrown into the water. Two adults managed to swim to a nearby dock, while a third vanished beneath the surface and was later recovered by responders after an extended underwater search. Contra Costa County sheriff's dive teams spent about two hours searching before bringing the victim to shore, and Marine Patrol deputies have opened a fatal vessel accident investigation.
Rescue and Investigation
Delta Station and Marine Patrol deputies rushed to the Discovery Bay Marina launch ramp on Sunday, joined by the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District and the U.S. Coast Guard, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office. The sheriff's post states that the jet ski, carrying three people, flipped in the water. Two adults made it to a dock on their own. The third person disappeared underwater before responders located and recovered the individual.
The department says the victim's identity is being withheld until the family can be notified. Marine Patrol is leading the fatal vessel accident investigation.
Marine Services and Dive-Team Role
The Sheriff's Marine Services Unit patrols long stretches of the Delta and maintains a dive team certified for underwater search and recovery, according to the agency's Marine Patrol Unit. Those teams regularly coordinate with local fire agencies and the U.S. Coast Guard on water rescues, evidence recovery and wreck investigations, a routine that played out again in this incident.
Where It Happened
Authorities say the crash occurred near the public launch and docks at Discovery Bay Marina, which lists its office at 5901 Marina Road in Discovery Bay. Two adults who had been aboard the jet ski swam to a nearby dock, while the third person went under the water. Responders ultimately located the individual after an underwater search, according to the sheriff’s Facebook post.

Boating Safety in the Delta
The San Joaquin Delta is already considered one of Northern California’s busiest and most accident-prone waterways, and state boating officials have long pushed for stricter safety habits. The California Division of Boating and Waterways highlights life-jacket use and carrying a California Boater Card as basic precautions for anyone operating personal watercraft.
