Early Saturday on the Dolphin Expressway, a wrong-way call ended in gunfire after a Florida Highway Patrol trooper shot a woman who authorities say attacked him with a knife in northwest Miami‑Dade. Both the trooper and the woman were taken to a nearby hospital with injuries officials described as non‑life‑threatening.
What Happened
According to Local 10 and Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Alex Camacho, troopers responded around 5:30 a.m. Saturday after getting reports of a vehicle traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of SR‑836 near Northwest 107th Avenue.
Camacho said a trooper later found the vehicle stopped in the grassy center median and made contact with a woman at the scene. Authorities say she pulled out a knife and attacked the trooper, who then discharged his firearm and struck her. The trooper and the woman were both transported to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital for treatment, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is leading the investigation.
Where It Happened
The Dolphin Expressway (SR‑836) is a heavily traveled east‑west artery serving Miami International Airport and nearby neighborhoods, and it has already seen multiple crashes and police responses this year. In one recent incident, CBS Miami reported that a driver slammed into an FHP cruiser during a DUI stop on the same highway, a stark reminder of how quickly routine traffic calls can turn dangerous for troopers and drivers alike.
Investigation And Next Steps
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement typically takes the lead on criminal investigations after officer‑involved shootings, a process that can move carefully as evidence is gathered and reviewed. Coverage of a recent case by WFTV described the same practice and the deliberate pace such probes often follow.
Authorities said additional details will be released as the FDLE investigation moves forward. Officials did not immediately release the names of the trooper or the woman involved. Drivers moving through the area of Northwest 107th Avenue and SR‑836 may encounter lane closures or delays while investigators process the scene.
