Downtown Concord’s restaurant shuffle is getting a sizzling new chapter. Mestiza Steakhouse is set to move into the Union Street corner spot long occupied by Gianni’s Trattoria, a fixture that anchored the block for more than 15 years. The incoming concept, described as a high-quality steakhouse, is taking over 16 Union Street South with a menu centered on steak cuts and classic sides, adding to the churn on Union Street as longtime operators grapple with rising costs and fresh development pressure.
According to the Charlotte Observer, Mestiza Steakhouse will replace the former Gianni’s at 16 Union St S and intends to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. The planned menu includes wine-braised short ribs, grilled salmon, gnocchi bolognese and tapas, along with sides such as mac and cheese, asparagus and sweet potato souffle. Steak lovers will likely zero in on a 32-ounce porterhouse that comes plated with mashed potatoes and vegetables.
Gianni’s Relocates to Gibson Mill
Gianni’s Trattoria has already closed its Union Street dining room and reopened at Gibson Mill Market on McGill Avenue. Gianni’s website lists the restaurant at 325 McGill Ave NW, and the Gibson Mill directory shows the Italian spot as a tenant there.
Owner Seeks A Fresh Start
Owner John Goode has said the relocation was aimed at giving Gianni’s a “fresh start” after dealing with development headaches and rising lease costs. Partners at Gibson Mill told reporters they approached Gianni’s when they heard the restaurant might be pushed out, according to Axios.
The Charlotte Observer reports that CharlotteFive reached out to the incoming Mestiza team and was still awaiting a response. No firm opening date has been announced for the new steakhouse, and the Union Street corner is expected to be built out and prepped before any soft opening is put on the calendar.
Gianni’s continues to serve customers at its Gibson Mill location; diners should check Gianni’s website for current hours and reservations. For Concord residents who have watched Union Street’s dining lineup evolve over the years, Mestiza’s arrival is poised to add a steak-focused option to the block once doors officially open.
