A late-night argument over money in downtown Los Angeles ended in gunfire Sunday, leaving a man in his 20s wounded and police searching for the shooter, authorities said.
The shooting unfolded near Central Avenue and Second Street at about 9:40 p.m. Paramedics took the victim to a hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. The suspect took off before officers arrived and was still at large Monday, according to police.
What the police say
As reported by MyNewsLA, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman said the confrontation started as an argument over money, and another male opened fire on the victim. The spokesman provided the approximate time of the shooting and confirmed that the suspect left the scene. As of Monday, no arrests had been announced.
Police response and how to help
Detectives from the LAPD Central Bureau responded to the area, collecting evidence and canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses, the department said. The LAPD's Central Bureau provides contact numbers and tip lines for downtown-related cases, including a main station line at 213-833-3735 and online reporting tools available through its bureau page.
Where this fits
The shooting underscores how street-level gun violence can still flare up in parts of the city even as overall killings have declined. The Los Angeles Times reported that tentative LAPD data showed 230 homicides in 2025 - the fewest in the city since 1966 - while shootings and officer-involved incidents remain a key focus for law enforcement and community groups.
