An inmate at the Multnomah County Detention Center in downtown Portland died Thursday after a medical emergency in custody that started with deputies finding the person unresponsive in a cell, authorities said.
Deputies responded to the medical incident around 1:30 p.m. on March 26, 2026, and called in Corrections Health staff, who began life‑saving measures. Paramedics continued those efforts as the inmate was taken to a local hospital, where the person was later pronounced dead, according to the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office.
According to KATU, the sheriff’s office said the person had been in custody since Feb. 19. Paramedics from Portland Fire & Rescue and American Medical Response continued care while transporting the inmate to the hospital. Officials said the individual’s identity will be released after next of kin have been notified.
