A quiet Sunday morning in Townsend turned tense when firefighters rushed to a structure fire on Dudley Road shortly before 7 a.m., with officials quickly urging the public to steer clear while crews worked to get the flames under control.
According to NBC10 Boston, the Townsend Fire Department said firefighters were on scene shortly before 7 a.m. and asked residents to avoid the area. The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services told NBC that state police fire investigators assigned to the State Fire Marshal's office were responding to assist the town's department.
Townsend's recent fire history
Townsend has seen several large structure fires in recent years, including a five-alarm house blaze in 2023 that drew mutual aid from more than a dozen neighboring departments, according to Boston.com. That earlier fire showed how quickly wintertime residential blazes can strain a small town's resources and why mutual aid and state investigators sometimes end up on scene.
Safety reminders and local resources
The Townsend Fire & EMS website notes that open-air burning season runs through May 1 and encourages residents to keep smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in working order and to sign up for CodeRED emergency alerts. The department also maintains a live radio feed and posts incident updates to its social channels during active responses.
There was no immediate word on injuries or the fire's cause, NBC10 Boston reported. Investigators from the State Fire Marshal's office were expected to join crews on scene, according to the same report. This is a developing story and will be updated as officials release new information.
