East Oakland’s cult‑favorite carnitas lonchera, Carnitas Carnitas Zamora, is trading a set of truck keys for a set of front‑door keys. The Sunday destination is opening its first brick‑and‑mortar taqueria in April at 6633 Bancroft Ave. Owner Alejandro Rocha told the SF Chronicle, "They gave us the keys Wednesday. We’re very excited but also nervous." The new spot will let the crew sling its signature cuts more often, while the beloved food truck keeps rolling on Sundays.
Rocha plans to stick with the formula that turned the truck into a weekend habit: pork braised in lard, chopped with a cleaver and served as maciza (loin), ribs, skin and buche in handmade corn tortillas or sold by the pound. Diners will still get to doctor their plates at a condiment bar stocked with salsas and pickled jalapeños. On top of that, the brick‑and‑mortar will bring new options, including carne asada and al pastor, plus burritos and tortas for the first time. The room will seat roughly 30, and the taqueria is set to operate Tuesday through Saturday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
From lonchera to storefront
Rocha launched the food truck in 2022 after missing the confit‑style carnitas of his hometown, and the operation took off fast, selling about 120 pounds of pork on its first day. "It’s like a weekly ritual," Rocha said, as influencer buzz and old‑fashioned word of mouth combined to push wait times at the truck to nearly two hours at one point, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.
The space and the neighborhood
The new storefront at 6633 Bancroft Ave previously housed Mi Zacatecas, a Zacatecan restaurant that moved into a larger East Oakland location and helped anchor the block’s Mexican‑food offerings. That address now gives Rocha room to branch out beyond tacos. The shift also reflects a broader East Bay trend of hit food trucks locking in permanent spaces while keeping their mobile operations on the road, as documented by KQED.
What to know before you go
Local food creators and community‑driven coverage helped turn Carnitas Carnitas Zamora from a Sunday tip into a full‑blown destination, and word of the brick‑and‑mortar was first spotted in food‑scene social posts that quickly built buzz. Oaklandside has previously highlighted creators like Victor Xie recommending Carnitas Zamora as a Sunday stop, along with the broader role of social media in lifting up small East Oakland food operations. Expect the lonchera to keep its Sunday ritual while the new taqueria brings that same porky payoff to weekday and Saturday crowds.
