Two people were killed Tuesday in Erda when a semitruck crashed into their Chevy Corvette on State Route 179, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. Emergency crews shut down the northbound lanes at the crash site and put lane restrictions in place on nearby Parachute Park Lane while first responders worked. Troopers said both people in the Corvette were pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials' account of the collision
Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Cameron Roden told KSL NewsRadio the Corvette was turning left from Parachute Park Lane onto State Route 179 when it was hit by an oncoming semitruck. Roden said both occupants of the sports car died at the scene. Investigators closed northbound SR-179 for several hours while they documented the wreck and cleared debris. Troopers did not immediately release the victims' names, citing the need to notify family members first.
Statewide context and local history
The deadly collision adds to a troubling tally on Utah's rural highways. The Utah Department of Transportation and Department of Public Safety reported 264 traffic deaths statewide in 2025, highlighting ongoing safety concerns on secondary roads. UDOT and DPS said officials are focusing on engineering, enforcement and education in an effort to bring those numbers down. SR-179 has seen serious crashes before, and a 2025 collision on the same route also involved a left turn that ended in a fatality, according to Gephardt Daily.
Investigation and what to watch for
Troopers said the crash remains under active investigation and asked anyone with dash-cam footage or other information to contact the Utah Highway Patrol. According to KSL NewsRadio, investigators plan to release additional details as they become available. Drivers moving through the Erda area were advised to expect lingering delays while crews finish their work at the scene and fully reopen the roadway.
