Light snow is sliding across Indianapolis this morning, briefly cutting visibility and slicking up bridges, overpasses and untreated neighborhood streets. Temperatures are cold, in the upper teens now, and will only warm to about 29°F this afternoon with west-northwest winds gusting near 24 mph. If you have to drive during the morning commute, expect stretches of slush and reduced traction right when traffic is heaviest.
What Officials Are Saying
The National Weather Service in Indianapolis issued a Special Weather Statement early Tuesday warning that isolated to scattered snow showers will gradually wind down this morning, but not before leaving behind brief slick spots and sudden drops in visibility through rush hour, especially on elevated roadways, according to NWS Indianapolis. Forecasters are also flagging wind chills near zero this morning, so anyone headed outside for more than a quick dash to the car should bundle up.
Tonight Into Early Wednesday
Clouds will build back in this evening and light snow becomes more likely after about 2 a.m., with another light coating possible overnight. Most areas should pick up under an inch from that round. Lows will sit in the mid-20s overnight before milder air moves in Wednesday and temperatures climb into the 40s, which should melt most of the leftover morning slush.
Late-Week Warm Up
After the midweek cool-down, the pattern flips fast. Highs near 61°F are expected Thursday and readings could jump into the upper 60s to around 70°F by Friday and Saturday, so any lingering slush will not last long. There is only a slight chance for light rain Thursday; otherwise, the weekend looks much warmer and drier.
Practical Tips
Leave yourself extra time for the drive this morning, ease up on the gas on ramps and bridges, and be ready for sudden visibility changes in the heavier bursts of snow. For live road-condition updates, check INDOT’s traveler page or 511 before you head out at INDOT 511; crews will focus on main routes, so some neighborhood and side streets may stay slick a bit longer.
