A tense six-hour SWAT standoff at a Gainesville home ended early Friday with a suspected gunman dead and one Gainesville police officer in the hospital. Two other officers were also taken to area hospitals for evaluation and were described as physically stable. The drawn-out confrontation unfolded around Briarwood Drive and Skyline Drive and brought in a full-scale tactical response from multiple agencies.
What authorities say
Officers first arrived just after 10:30 p.m. Thursday, after a woman called 911 to report she "felt her life was threatened by a male at her residence," according to CBS News Atlanta. Police say the man inside opened fire from within the home as officers tried to make contact. One officer was hit, and another officer returned fire.
What began as a late-night emergency call quickly escalated into roughly six hours of standoff tactics. The Hall County Sheriff's Office SWAT team responded, joined by the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office, Flowery Branch Police and other nearby agencies.
Injuries and outcome
Officials told CBS News Atlanta that the caller reported she believed her life was in immediate danger. The officer who was shot was rushed to a local hospital, and authorities said a ballistic vest likely prevented a much more serious injury. Two additional Gainesville officers were taken to hospitals to be checked out and were described as physically stable.
Investigators say the suspect eventually came out of the home and exchanged gunfire with SWAT officers. He was hit at least once and later died at a local hospital.
Investigation

The Hall County Sheriff's Office lists a specialized SWAT unit among its divisions and notes that it frequently works with neighboring departments during major incidents, according to the sheriff's office website. That regional approach played out here, with Hall County, Forsyth County and Flowery Branch officers all taking part in the response.
Authorities have not yet released the suspect's identity or any possible motive. Officials say more details will be shared as the GBI's review moves forward.
