Houston police descended on the Gulfton neighborhood in southwest Houston on Wednesday evening after an officer-involved shooting near Renwick Drive and Glenmont Drive left a suspect dead. Authorities said no officers were injured as investigators worked the scene.
According to FOX 26 Houston, Houston police initially called the Houston Fire Department to check on a patient, and a fire engine arrived before an ambulance. FOX 26 reports that shots were fired when the ambulance pulled up, and officials confirmed the suspect died at the scene. Officers stayed in the area into the night while detectives opened an active investigation into what led up to the shooting.
Gulfton Corridor on Edge After String of Shootings
The stretch around Renwick and Glenmont has already seen serious violence this year. On March 11, a 17-year-old was hospitalized after being shot while walking in southwest Houston, as reported by Click2Houston. In December, a man was found shot dead between Gulfton apartments in a case that drew headlines as a Glenmont horror, highlighting recurring violence along the corridor. The proximity of multiple recent shootings has kept the area under heavy police scrutiny and residents understandably on edge.
How Houston Police Handle Officer-Involved Shootings
Per the Houston Police Department, officer-involved shooting scenes are independently investigated by multiple units, typically HPD’s Homicide Division, Internal Affairs, the Houston Forensic Science Center and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. The department maintains an archive of officer-involved shooting summaries and statistics on its site, and that standard protocol means detectives and several civil agencies will likely be involved as this case moves forward.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact HPD’s Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers, as noted in previous coverage of the Glenmont homicide. This story will be updated as officials release more details and provide any formal statements from Houston police.
