What was supposed to be a straightforward traffic assignment on San Antonio’s Northeast Side turned tense Saturday night when an officer’s personal vehicle, outfitted with emergency lights, was hit by apparent gunfire on the highway. The officer, who was positioned along the roadway directing traffic, reported hearing a loud noise and, after stepping out to check, found his vehicle had been struck. No injuries were reported.
According to News 4 San Antonio, the incident happened at about 8:24 p.m. near I-35 North and Walzem Road while the officer was assisting with traffic control in his personal vehicle. Police told the station they found evidence of apparent gunfire on the vehicle but have not provided a suspect or vehicle description.
Walzem corridor’s recent safety record
Walzem Road and the stretch of I-35 that runs alongside it have seen more than their share of serious incidents in recent years. A deadly head-on crash on Walzem in January led to prolonged road closures, and KSAT reported a 2021 case in which a driver was struck multiple times by gunfire on I-35 between Walzem and Eisenhauer.
Investigation underway
San Antonio Police say the case remains under investigation and have not released a suspect description. No arrests were reported in the initial account. Officers are asking anyone who might have seen or recorded anything to come forward as investigators work to determine where the shots originated, according to News 4 San Antonio.
